Load-shedding expected today

Eskom implements countrywide load-shedding.

Emergency load-shedding will be implemented today (Sunday) after a silo holding over 10 00t of Majuba coal cracked on Saturday, Eskom said.

This led to a loss of 1 800 MW at the Majuba power station, in KwaZulu-Natal.

Load-shedding will start at around 08:00 and is expected to last till 22:00, but it might continue into the week.

Eskom said in a statement that the damaged silo impacted coal supplies to all six units at the power station. This resulted in the power station operating at reduced capacity of 1 300 MW.

“Teams are on site and are in the process of dispatching mobile coal feeders to site. In the unlikely event that this contingency is unsuccessful, it may impact the full supply from the power station,” the statement read.
