Man jailed after tavern fight

Hammanskraal man sentenced for culpable homicide.

A Hammanskraal man has been jailed for four years after becoming involved in a tavern fight that led to the death of his opponent.

Oupa Matsoba (46) was sentenced to seven years imprisonment of which three years were suspended by the Moretele Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. He was convicted of culpable homicide.

Police spokesperson Constable Herman Moremi said the trial stemmed from the death of Mofati Manyathela (58) in Stinkwater, Hammanskraal, on 12 November 2012.

Moremi said Matsoba and Manyathela were fighting over money in a tavern when Matsoba throttled Manyathela.

“Manyathela fell to the ground and the two were separated by people around them. They went back to their drinks as if nothing had happened. A few minutes later Manyathela started complaining about a pain in his throat and asked for water.”

Manyathela was given water, but collapsed.

“People in the tavern thought he had fainted and tried to revive him. They soon discovered he was dead,” said Moremi.
