People in Elandspoort are deeply worried about cracks in their RDP houses. Resident Sandra Nel said she was afraid one of the walls of her house would collapse.
“The wall is already crumbling and I am scared it will end up falling on someone. When I went to report the crack at the construction site I was told that cracks would happen and that they will be fixed later.”
Nel has a sickly husband, who sometimes struggles to walk, and she feared he would be injured by a collapsing wall.
“We have put heavy wood in front of the wall to block it from falling over. Our neighbours are trying to prop up their walls by using bricks.”
Another resident, Lena Mamabolo, said the rooftop of her house was falling apart. “When the wind blows, pieces of the top of the house fall off.”
The two residents said they feared strong winds, because it sometimes felt as if their houses were falling apart.
Nel said: “I am grateful for my house but cannot live like this. We have reported the problems to the Tshwane metro office in Atteridgeville but nothing is being done.”
Another problem was leaking geysers.
Resident Gladys Mokone said: “My geyser has been leaking from the day I moved into this house. When it rains, the roof in one of the bedrooms leaks. I have reported this but I am always told that the house I live in is the best house because it is a show house.”
Comment from Tshwane metro could not be obtained immediately.
