The corner of Willem Cruywagen and John streets in Pretoria North, believed to be a crime nest, was recently cleaned up.
During the clean-up, community members uncovered items suspected of being stolen.
AfriForum’s Noord van die Berg (North of the Mountain) neighbourhood team recently spent two days cleaning up the piece of land, which the group said has become a known hiding place for criminals.
According to the branch, the clean-up was aimed at improving the condition of the area while also addressing concerns about illegal activity taking place in and around the vacant piece of land.
Members of the neighbourhood team found several items, including wireless beams believed to be linked to the recent break-ins in the community.
Branch co-ordinator Ruan Janse van Vuuren said the discovery highlighted the importance of residents taking an active role in keeping an eye on their surroundings.
He said the team decided to roll up its sleeves and begin cleaning the area, only to come across goods that appeared to have been taken in broad daylight over the weekend.

The discovery has raised further concerns among residents, as neglected and overgrown areas are potential hiding places for criminals and stolen property.
Janse van Vuuren urged residents to remain vigilant and to report suspicious activity when they encounter it.
The AfriForum division said residents do not need to be members of a neighbourhood watch to play a role in preventing crime.
They stated that tackling crime requires a collective effort, with residents encouraged to take responsibility for their surroundings and remain alert.
The branch also urged residents to avoid confronting suspected criminals themselves and instead report suspicious activity through the appropriate channels.
The clean-up operation forms part of broader efforts by community members to reclaim neglected spaces and make them less attractive to possible criminals.

By removing overgrown vegetation and rubbish from the area, the organisation hopes to improve visibility and discourage potential lawbreakers from using the site to hide or conceal stolen property.
Janse van Vuuren reiterated the importance of civic engagement, adding that it remains crucial to efforts to make neighbourhoods safer.
Residents interested in joining the neighbourhood team’s community safety initiatives have been encouraged to contact the branch and become involved in local crime-prevention efforts.
