Oscar appeal bid filed today
The National Prosecuting Authority has filed an application for leave to argue for a murder conviction against Oscar Pistorius.
An application to appeal against the judgment and sentence of former international sports icon Oscar Pistorius was filed in the High Court in Pretoria on Tuesday.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is seeking leave to appeal on a question of law against the culpable homicide conviction of Pistorius, spokesman Nathi Mncube told Rekord.
The athlete, known as the Blade Runner from the prosthetic legs he achieved fame with as a paralympian, was charged with murder for the shooting death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
He was acquitted on this charge by Judge Thokozile Masipa, who instead found Pistorius guilty of culpable homicide. She sentenced him to five years imprisonment for the crime.
The NPA said in a statement: “The merits of the NPA’s argument in regard to the appeal are contained in the papers filed with the registrar of the North Gauteng High Court today. This means that the matter is now officially sub judice and consequently the NPA will not be able to discuss the matter publicly until judgement is delivered by the court.”
