Employer gives away hit-and-run culprit

Police have arrested a man who was involved in a hit-and-run accident that left a man dead on Sunday.

Police have arrested a man said to have been involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident in Sunset View on Sunday night.

Hercules police spokesperson Captain Bonginkosi Msimango said on Tuesday the 43-year-old man was given away by his employer.

“The employer came to the police station to lay a charge against the man for using his vehicle without consent.”

The police investigated and linked the man to the Sunday night accident in Van der Hoff road that cost the life of Simon Mkhandawini, who was knocked over while riding a bicycle.

Msimango said an eyewitness saw a white sedan vehicle hitting Mkhandawini (43).

“The witness heard a loud bang and when he looked he saw a man on the ground, with a vehicle standing not far from him. The car drove off without checking the man he had run over. When paramedics arrived at the scene, Mkhandawini was dead.”

The 43-year-old driver was arrested on Monday and would face culpable homicide and other charges.

In another hit-and-run at the weekend, a pedestrian was killed and two others injured when they were knocked over by a vehicle in Kameeldrift-West in Pretoria street. Police were still searching for the driver.

“With the community’s assistance we will be able to find the culprit who hit the three people and killed one,” said Msimango.

He said one of the victims died at the scene and the other two were taken to hospital.

“The victim has been identified as 33-year-old Jan Maluleke.”
