Three men have been arrested after attempting to steal a vehicle recently in Hatfield, the Hatfield city improvement district (CID) security said on Monday.
Security guards caught the men who are in their mid-20s on the corner of Festival and Burnett streets after chase.
CID chief operations officer Danie Basson said the men were seen trying to steal a vehicle near the corner of Lynwood and Roper streets. The security guard patrolling in the area noticed the suspicious activity and approach the men.
“The suspects saw the security guard in uniform approaching and they jumped into their vehicle and sped off,” Basson said.
The security guard notified CCTV operators who monitored the movement of the getaway vehicle until the security guards cornered it.
Brooklyn and Sunnyside police assisted the security guard during arrest. Equipment used for stealing cars was confiscated at the scene.
Basson said fighting theft of motor vehicles and theft-out-of-motor vehicles was their priority in the Hatfield area. He said most theft-out-of-motor vehicles happened because of motorists’ negligence. “Some motorists forget to lock their vehicles or to close windows,” Basson said.
He said being negligent makes it easier for criminals to gain access and steal from inside the vehicle or steal the vehicle.
Basson advised motorists to add extra security features to protect their vehicles rather than only relying on a vehicle’s standard security features.
