Shots fired at shopping centre

It is alleged that a Centurion security guard fired a shot at car.

A confrontation between a security guard and a motorist caused panic at a Centurion shopping centre at the weekend.

A security guard of Orange Fox Security Solutions apparently stopped a car and an altercation between him and the driver ensued. The guard then allegedly fired a shot at the car, causing shoppers to flee in panic.

Hannes du Buisson of Centurion Concerned Citizens said the organisation was told about the episode.

“We received a call that shots had been fired at Oriental City and that assistance was needed.”

He condemned the conduct of the guard, saying: “Firing shots during an altercation should be considered as attempted murder. Doing this is highly irresponsible, not to mention dangerous. There are families with small children who visit the centre. What happens if that stray bullet accidentally hits someone?”

Oriental City’s management declined to comment and referred enquiries to Orange Fox.

CEO Cecil Swart said the matter was being investigated.

“We are working with the police to investigate the matter. We handed over security camera footage of the incident. If the security guard is found to be in the wrong, we will take the appropriate steps,” he said.

“As far as we are aware, no one has laid any charges with the police, but the matter will still be investigated. People are making up stories about what happened. We will share the exact details of the incident as soon as the investigation is done.”

A number of residents has taken to social media about the episode. Some claim the security guard replaced the bullet in his pistol, and then exchanged it with another gun.

Orange Fox disputed this, rejecting the claims as “sensationalism”.
