Police warn citizens

The Lyttelton SAPS has called on citizens to become more vigilant in the fight against crime.

Lyttelton police have warned residents to be vigilant and avoid being easy targets for criminals.

Warrant Officer Hero Gumbu said one of the most problematic areas in Centurion was the open field on the corner of Hall Street and Von Willich Avenue in Lyttelton. “People often walk through the field on their way to work in the morning, and back home in the evening. This is when the criminals strike. They attack people with knives, and steal any valuables.”

He added that people who walk to work should find an alternative route. “The criminals are not the people who are living in the informal settlement across the road. These criminals just use the bushes next to the informal settlement to hide in.”

“We are also calling on people not to drive around with valuables in view inside their cars, as this makes them an easy target for smash and grab attempts. Before leaving your home, and setting off in your car, put all your valuables in your boot. We have issued a statement like this before, but people need to heed it. If they don’t they are just setting themselves up to be targeted by people who want to rob them.”
