Woman attacked in busy street

Two criminals driving around in the streets of the La Montagne and Murrayfield areas have residents in fear following two attacks in as many days.

A woman was robbed in broad daylight in a busy suburban street this week when two men pushed her to the ground and grabbed her handbag.

Marietjie van Deventer (58) had just parked her car at the south gate of the Skuilkrans after-school centre in Murrayfield on Tuesday when the attack happened.

“I was busy getting out of my car and this white vehicle suddenly stopped next to me. In a flash two men jumped out of the car, pushed me to the ground, grabbed my handbag and sped off,” the 58-year-old Van Deventer told Rekord.

She said the entire incident, during which not a single word had been uttered by either attacker, happened in less than two minutes.

“It was so quick, I did not even see their faces.”

Van Deventer was not badly hurt in the attack, she said, adding that neither of the men had a weapon with them.

Van Deventer, who lives in Silverton, purchases food for the after-school centre in Grace Ave on the border of Murrayfield and La Montagne. She said she adhered to a regular schedule as far as delivering the food to the centre was concerned and believed that she had been watched for a while before the attack.

Images of the white Toyota Tazz in which the two criminals drove off was caught on the La Montagne neighbourhood watch security cameras minutes before the attack.

Both Van Deventer and her daughter Mariaan Lees said the Silverton police had told them the same two men in the same car tried to rob a young girl on Wednesday morning, but she managed to get away.

“They tried to grab her as she got off a bus, the police told us,” Van Deventer said.

The two women requested residents of the area to be on the lookout for the vehicle and if spotted, to report it to the Silverton police immediately.

The Silverton police could not be reached for comment at the time of going to print.
