Water pipes bursting in the north of Pretoria has turned into a common occurrence.
The Tshwane metro has embarked on a drive to replace rusting steel pipes with new asbestos ones, but the rate of old pipes perishing keeps catching up with working teams.
Concerned resident Phillip Smith said a pipe burst on Tuesday evening in Calotta Street in Sinoville, but the metro said it could only be repaired in three days’ time.
By Thursday morning, the pipe was still leaking heavily.
Smith reported the pipe for the second time and received the same response.
“This is absolutely ridiculous, the pipe is leaking out thousands of litres of water,” he said.
“There is already a water shortage. The metro is not prioritising correctly. Soon we will be without water and then everybody will wonder why.”
Comment from Tshwane metro could not be obtained immediately.
