Leaking pipes a regular occurrence

TheTshwane metro says replacing old steel water pipes with new asbestos ones is a time-consuming and costly project.

Burst water pipes and water leaks have become a regular occurrence in the north of Pretoria. Residents are sitting with their hands in their hair due to the fact that they often don’t have running water.

According to the Tshwane metro, a project has been launched to replace old steel pipes with new ones made of asbestos which were more durable.

The project had been running for a number of years but was costly and time consuming, the metro said. Work had not continued throughout the current financial year due to a delay on the appointment of health and safety agents.

The project would take a number of years to complete, but the metro said it was determined to finish the work. Exactly when was difficult to say.

Replacing perished water pipes began in Pretoria North as this was the oldest part of the city and it had the worst recurrence of bursting pipes. During the first phase of the project, a small area in Pretoria North’s pipes were replaced.

The metro said money was an issue. A budget would have to made available to replace all pipes in the city as such a programme would require adequate resources.

Residents expressed concern this week about the waste of water because of leaking pipes.

Winnie Venter said a leak on the corner of Klipmossie and Montana streets had seen litres and litres of water being wasted the past two months.

Another resident, Sakkie Treurnich said a main water pipe in Valotta Street in Sinoville burst about two weeks ago.

The metro repaired this pipe, but Treurnich said small amounts of water were still leaking into the street. Treurnich said this was a regular occurrence in the area.

Mariëtte van Niekerk, a resident of Ninapark in the north of Pretoria said there is also a water leak on the corner of Heron and Coster streets. According to her, water had been leaking at this point for about two years.
