Power supply expected to be tight

Consumers urged to use electricity sparingly as power systems are expected to be tight this week due to the wet weather, Eskom said.

Eskom has urged consumers to work sparingly with power this week.

“The system is expected to be tight during the evening peaks for the next few days as a result of the continued nippy and cloudy weather conditions forecasted for the next few days, as well as the loss of additional units at our power stations as a result of technical faults,” Eskom said in a statement.

After the country was hit with load shedding two weeks ago due to a damaged silo at the Majuba power station, Eskom said the power station was generating about 1600MW due to the wet coal as coal handling takes place in the open.

Eskom, however, said it has introduced a wet coal management strategy to minimise the risk of wet coal.

“It is however not possible to neutralise this risk completely, especially over periods of prolonged high rainfall.”

Consumers were urged to switch off geysers, pool pumps, non-essential lights, air-conditioners and respond to alerts on television in the evening.
