Four new schools for Pretoria

The Gautenge education department will open four new schools in the city next year.

Four new schools will be opened in Pretoria next year, the Gauteng education department said.

Spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane said R690 million had been set aside to build new schools in the province during the 2014/15 financial year as school enrolment had been rising at 2% a year.

“The schools will be in Soshanguve, Centurion, Nellmapius in Mamelodi and Hammanskraal and will cater for approximately 1 000 learners each.”

Sekhonyane said the school in Soshanguve was expected to be completed by March next year and the others in January.

Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said the province had a pupil population of about 2.1 million, and the number of teachers stood at 77 265.

“The department successfully increased the number of non-fee schools to 1 310 schools and is currently supporting 1 112 605 learners. We have provided scholar transport to 70 207 learners in the province,” he said.
