Street closures for Mandela event

Motorists should note various road closures in Arcadia due to the Unite4Mandela event at the Union Buildings on Saturday.

Motorists are urged to use alternative routes if they are travelling through Arcadia on Friday and Saturday, as various roads in the area will be closed due to preparations for the Nelson Mandela Sport and Culture Day, the department of arts and culture said. The event, which will take place on Saturday at the Union Buildings, is part of the Unite 2.0: One Man, One Nation, One Celebration campaign in honour of the late president.

“It honours former president Nelson Mandela’s unwavering commitment to justice, equality, non-racialism, nation building and social cohesion,” the department said.

The following streets will be closed:

• Friday – Leyds and Zeederberg streets close to Stanza Bopape Street from 09:00 to 15:00

• Saturday – Corner of Stanza Bopape and Wessels streets and corner Stanza Bopape and Johan streets from 03:00

• Saturday – Full road closures on Government, Madiba, Leyds, Tom Jenkins and Stanza Bopape streets.

The event will include athletics, road running, walking and cycling. A concert will be held at the southern lawn of the Union Buildings after the events.
