Hostage scare before suicide attempt

Police said a man shot himself in the cheek in a suicide attempt after what was initially believed to be a hostage drama.

A 40-year-old man shot himself in the cheek in a suicide attempt in Capital Park on Tuesday morning in what initially appeared to be a hostage drama, police spokesperson Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng told Rekord.

Police, hostage negotiators and paramedics were called to the scene shortly after 09:00 when neighbours heard several gun shots and rumours of a hostage situation started doing the rounds.

“It is not a hostage situation. A man was attempting to commit suicide but we penetrated the house and disarmed him,” Mofokeng said.Mofokeng said the man was intoxicated and was alone in the house.

“He was taken to hospital and might face charges of discharging a firearm in a residential area. We can confirm that the firearm belonged to him and was licensed.”
