Load shedding survival guide

John October has created a load shedding survival guide to make sure you don’t get left out in the dark.

With deliberate power cuts by Eskom becoming a part of our lives, Dial Direct Insurance spokesperson John October, has compiled a useful load shedding survival guide.

1. Put the proposed schedule on your fridge to make sure that your family has enough time to prepare for the power outage.

2. While alarm systems, garage doors and electric gates generally rely on electricity, make sure that these items have back-up batteries. If your alarm system does not have a back-up, make sure you buy a mobile panic button that is linked to a reputable emergency response company.

3. If you rely on a cordless phone, which would obviously not be working during a power outage, keep your cellphone handy.

4. Use LED globes with a rechargeable battery backup, so that when the power goes off, you just need to connect the rechargeable battery to the LED globe to produce light.

5. Remember to make sure that your laptop, cell phone and tablet computer are fully charged so that you are able to still use them.

6. Keep an oil lamp, battery-powered light, lantern or portable light that is charged beforehand in various, easily accessible locations around your home. Remember to make sure that you also have spare batteries.

7. Fill a thermos flask with boiling water before the blackout for a warm cup of tea or coffee during the blackout.

8. If your budget allows you, buy a portable generator. Learn to use your generator safely and test it every month. Make sure you always have enough fuel to run your generator for up to a week.
