New Years’ babies delight all
Babies born on New Year's Day brought a ray of sunshine to an otherwise rainy morning.
The New Year brought with it new life at several hospitals in the capital city with some of the new born babies being met by important people.
At Netcare Femina Hospital in Pretoria two mothers gave birth to a baby boy and girl respectively in the early hours of New Year’s Day, with four other mothers giving birth later on Thursday.
The two babies born first received a visit from the Minister of Home Affairs, Malusi Gigaba, who gave the parents unabridged birth certificates for the new-borns.
During his visit, Gigaba gave a birth certificate to Lerato Makhafola and her son, Mphoentle. He also visited Johan and Laetitia Smit and their newborn son Lehan, who was born in the early hours of New Year’s Day, weighing a healthy 4.07kg.
Father Johan could hardly contain his smile and when Gigaba visited him he said that the minister must remember his son’s name, because little Lehan would one day play rugby for the Blue Bulls. Mom Laetitia said that they always joked and said that Lehan should do his best to arrive in January – not December. “We kept saying, just arrive in January, even if it is at 00:00 and well, here he is.”
Labour Ward Unit Manager Adrie Coertze said that four babies had natural births while two mothers gave birth by C-Sections.
At Unitas Hospital in Centurion, five babies were born before 12:00 of the morning of 1 January and two others were expected later in the day. Of the seven expected potential babies, two were natural births and 5 were C-Sections. The parents of the children were all ecstatic, though most were tired from their stressful mornings.
Tshwane Mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa also visited several mothers who gave birth to New Year’s babies where he handed out gifts and necessities. The mayor on Christmas Day also spend his time visiting babies born at hospitals such as Steve Biko and several clinincs.
