Locals dance for hours in Montana for Wollies

Attendees were required to donate a bag of dog food for admittance into the session.

Fitness enthusiasts this weekend descended on NG Kerk Montana with a charitable goal in mind: to raise funds and donations for Wollies Animal Shelter in the Pink Battle on the Dancefloor.

Studio instructor and event co-ordinator Rochton de Swardt of Rids Studio says Wollies is one of three charities that the studio holds fundraisers for. The others include breast (or any) cancer awareness and collecting bottle caps for an ongoing plastic bottle cap collection initiative in partnership with BDS Plastico to help fund wheelchairs and support learners.

The day’s event started with a balloon release ceremony where attendees could write the names of loved ones who have succumbed to cancer before the three-hour-long dancing began.

“In 2010, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. She’s still alive. This is just to honour that; that’s how it started. It’s also for people who have passed on from any type of cancer. The dancing is a challenge; it’s to push people and have fun for a good cause,” De Swardt said.

Attendees were in support of cancer awareness and also, the opportunity to benefit a charity with their participation.

De Swardt says the studio looks forward to hosting similar events next year in April and in October.
