Mamelodi residents demand service delivery

Irate residents of Mahube Valley Extension 15 barricaded the three main entrance roads to Mamelodi East on Thursday, demanding improved service delivery especially with regard to electricity and water.

Using stones, bricks and also burnt down tyres, they said the government and ward councillors had been failing them for years.

They woke up as early as 02:00 to close down the main roads next to the Mahube Valley Mall preventing residents from going to work, children from going to school, and customers from doing their shoppping at the mall.

Seetane Makaleng, a resident at Mahube Valley, Extension 15, said this was not the first protest of its kind.

“But our government always come with empty promises. They removed us at Phase 3 and Extension 11 Informal Settlement in November 2013 and promised permanent stands with water and electricity, but it was all lies and empty promise,” he said.

“We tried to have meeting with the officials, but no one came. One block of a street has to use one toilet and walk long distances to fetch water.”

The residents vowed to continue with this protest until their demands were heeded.
