Toddler found unharmed after hijack kidnapping

A toddler was found unharmed after he was kidnapped by hijackers on Friday, police said.

A 2-year-old boy was found safe and unharmed after he was kidnapped by hijackers in Turrfontein West, Johannesburg, provincial police spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said.

This after information was received from eblockwatch that men hijacked a VW Golf on Friday afternoon after they had shot a police officer.

“It is alleged that on Friday 14:50, members of the Booysens police were chasing a suspected hijacked Nissan Sentra in Turrfontein West. The suspects shortly crashed the Sentra and fled the scene,” Mogale said.

One of the hijackers was arrested and placed in the back of the police van while a police officer continued to search for the other hijacker.

“When he found the second suspect, a struggle ensued and the suspect managed to overpower the police officer, dispossessing him of his firearm,” Mogale said.

The hijacker then fired a shot at the policeman, injuring him in the arm and stomach.

The hijacker then jumped into the police van and fled, with his accomplice still at the back of the van.

The suspect then hijacked a VW Golf which had a 2-year-old boy strapped into a safety seat on the back seat.

After releasing his accomplice from the back of the van, the hijackers fled in the Golf, with the baby still in the car.

“Members of Crime Intelligence were activated and a few hours later, information led them to Braamfontein where the Golf was recovered. The baby was still strapped in his safety seat in the back – unhurt. He has since been reunited with his parents,” said Mogale.

She said investigations continue as the hijackers are still at large.
