Teenager killed during land occupation protest
A teenage boy was killed and a councillor's house was burnt after land occupation protest.
An Atteridgeville teenage boy was killed while residents were looting a tuck shop on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson Captain Thomas Mufamadi said a local alerted the police.
“On arrival at the scene, the police were told that a Somalian shop owner had shot dead a 19-year-old boy.”
Mufamadi said the community were protesting over land occupation issues.
Four people, all Somalian shop owners, were arrested.
Betty Ringane, Ward 48 councillor, said her house was vandalised after people she believed had been involved in the looting tried to burn her house down.
“My windows were broken and fire was started in the kitchen and an outside room.”
Ringane said two flat screen television sets, a microwave and clothes from the main bedroom were stolen.
“After stealing the items from my house, they put petrol in the laundry machine and set it alight. The municipal office where I work was also attacked and the fence and windows vandalised.”
She said this started after officials from the department of human settlements evicted people who apparently invaded land in the area.
“They believed that I had something to do with them being evicted and wanted me to pay.”
Ringane said the Tshwane metro had promised to help her in getting her house fixed.
