High police visibility operations resulted in 42 arrests over the weekend in property and contact-related crimes.
The 42 people were arrested in the Sunnyside cluster, which included Sunnyside, Brooklyn, Garsfontein, Villieria, Pretoria Moot and Lyttelton police stations and will appear in court this week.
“Police flooded the streets, residential areas and business sectors to ensure that all communities were and felt safe over the weekend. Additional manpower was also utilised during the Tuks Rag event that took place on Saturday at the University of Pretoria. No serious incidents were reported during Rag,” Captain Colette Weilbach, police spokesperson, said.
She said the 42 arrests included six for driving under the influence of alcohol, ten for drug related offences and 11 for theft and shoplifting.
“Police officers also arrested three men for the possession of tools used for home burglaries, one for attempting to steal a motor vehicle, one for home burglary and two for the possession of suspected stolen property,” Weilbach said.
All the arrested people will appear in the Pretoria magistrate’s court and the Hatfield community court this week to face charges for the various crimes.
Weilbach said police would continue with awareness campaigns and high police visibility operations in the coming months as part of the South African Police Service’s national police day and 20 years of policing in democracy celebrations.
