A robber was shot during an armed robbery at a filling station on Friday night.
According to police spokesperson Sergeant Anne Poortman three armed men entered a Shell filling station at approximately 21:00 on the corner of Nana Sita Street and E’skia Mphalele Road before the shooting started.
“One of them remained at the door with a firearm while the other two took cartons of cigarettes and demanded cash from the cashier. A client who was busy filling up at the petrol pump, noticed the robbery and drove off to notify the police who were on patrol nearby,” she said.
The police called for backup and went to the scene. They commanded the robber who was keeping watch outside to surrender but instead he opened fire.
The police retaliated and the armed robber was wounded by police fire.
“The police went into the filling station shop and arrested the other two men. The injured man was taken to a nearby hospital where he is under police guard. The other two robbers are being detained at Central police station,” Poortman said.
A Norinco pistol with rounds, as well as R4 000 in cash and cigarettes were confiscated. A case of business robbery was opened and an investigation is under way. The arrested men, aged between 26 and 28, will appear in the Pretoria magistrate’s court soon.
