Jialiang Yu, a grade 9 pupil at Crawford College, Pretoria, has won gold medals in mathematics and science at the international competitions and assessment for schools – formerly known as the schools international assessment test.
Crawford schools use this test as a benchmark for their school’s performance against the international standard. The tests are administered by the Educational Assessment Australia Unit of the University of New South Wales, and are conducted in English, mathematics and science.
There are more than two million students who write these tests. It is particularly challenging because it evaluates skills, not the curriculum. This makes preparing for the test that much more demanding.
The prestigious competition is open to students of mathematics and science worldwide, which makes Yu’s achievement more remarkable. Yu received his junior full colours for mathematics and science in 2014.
