A Laudium businessman was shot and killed on Monday night on Wierda Road after being followed by two vehicles.
Centurion Concerned Citizens’ (CCC) spokesperson, Hannes du Buisson, said they received a call of about 14 gunshots heard from what sounded like an automatic rifle around 22:00.
“We arrived on the scene and found a white Toyota Corolla with two gunshot damages. A person was dead in the car,” Du Buisson said.
According to an off-duty paramedic, who wished to be called Jarred, the man was declared dead after suffering several gunshot wounds.
“He had four penetrating wounds. We also found bullet holes through the front passenger window of his car,” he said.
Du Buisson said the deceased was travelling with his brother, who had trailed behind in a gold-coloured Toyota Corolla, when they were followed from Laudium by a white and a black Volkswagen Golf.
The brother told the CCC, occupants of the Golf opened fired when they turned into Wierda Road from the R55.
“The brother’s car was hit twice but he said he managed to escape. His Corolla was found not far from where the killing took place.”
He said the deceased man’s car was found with the boot open but nothing inside.
Du Buisson said there were speculations on scene that the two brothers were transporting large amounts of cash.
“It is believed R35 000 was in the dead man’s car but there was no official confirmation of this. It appears not to be a hijacking but a robbery, if there was money stolen.”
According to a reliable source, the deceased owned a cash-and-carry in Laudium.
Police were unavailable for comment at the time of going to print.
