A Mamelodi man has reported a false hijacking to police after crashing a borrowed car.
He was caught out when he returned to the scene of the crash.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mike Mbewe said the culprit opened a hijacking case on 30 March, claiming that two men took his Mazda 323 in Mamelodi Extension 6.
“According to the man, two suspects in a silver-grey Toyota Corolla held him at gunpoint and instructed him to get out of his car. After the man refused, he said the men pulled him out of his Mazda and drove away with his car,” Mbewe said.
Mbewe said police tried to trace the stolen car and were informed by Silverton police that the car was involved in an accident in the Silverton area the same day.
“Mamelodi East police rushed to the accident scene and on arrival, they surprisingly found the complainant of the hijacking. It seems after he crashed, he reported the false hijacking and returned to the accident scene.”
He said the man admitted to lying about the hijacking, saying the Mazda was actually a borrowed car and he was afraid of facing the owner after the crash.
“He briefly appeared at the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court on 31 March and will reappear on 20 April.”
