A Laudium police officer is being charged with attempted murder and domestic violence after he held his wife and son hostage in their Waterkloof Ridge home on Monday night.
Lt-Col Dlamini Lungelo, provincial police spokesperson, said the warrant officer held his 37-year-old wife and his 14-year-old son captive in the house. He said circumstances around the hostage situation are still sketchy and it will form part of the investigation.
The neighbours informed the police of the situation just after 19:00.
According to a reliable source a hostage negotiating team was dispatched to the scene.
Lungelo said shots were fired but the wife and son managed to escape the situation unscathed.
The warrant officer was arrested and is being detained at the Brooklyn police station.
Lungelo said the man will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court soon.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a recent global prevalence figure indicates that 35% of women worldwide have experienced either intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime.
“On average, 30% of women who have been in a relationship, reported they have experienced some form of physical or sexual violence by their partner,” WHO said in a statement.
The statement said that 38% of murders of women are committed by an intimate partner.
According to WHO children who grow up in families where there is violence may suffer a range of behavioural and emotional disturbances. “These can also be associated with perpetrating or experiencing violence later in life,” WHO said.
