Residents of Doornpoort are concerned about a vacant house in the area that, according to them, poses a risk.
Charl du Toit, a resident in the area, said the house has been empty for almost a year, with the only occasional occupants being vagrants and homeless people.
“The sector police have been there a few times, but they cannot apprehend anybody as there was no one there at the time. There is, however, evidence of drinking in the empty home. The house looks like a haunted house with the windows smashed and entrance gate to the property removed. This house is causing a dangerous hideout for criminals and is posing a danger to neighbouring homes and families,” Du Toit said.
He was also concerned, since three of his cats have been poisoned in the last few months. “I cannot confirm whether these attacks were from vagrants or criminals hiding on the property, but I do have a report confirming they died by poison, which I find most disturbing.”
According to Democratic Alliance (DA) ward councillor for the area, Hannes Coetzee, he has not received any complaints from residents regarding the specific property. “I will personally have a look at the property as soon as possible, to assess the situation,” he said.
“The sector police in the Doornpoort area are sharp and patrols the whole area 24 hours a day. In cases where we have received word of illegal, informal houses being built on properties, we have had them removed very quickly,” Coetzee said.
