A resident of the prestigious Pretoria-Oos Retirement Village in Die Wilgers has been shot and wounded by armed intruders.
Tina Matthews (68) was attacked after two men scaled a 2.4 metre high wall and electric fence. The men entered her home and Matthews was shot in the hip during a struggle. The two then fled.
Willie Smith, relationship manager for Central Developments, the developer of the village, said Matthews’ neighbour, a Mr Bothma, heard her screaming for help, and rushed to her aid.
“Mr Bothma went into her home, helped her, and in the process pressed the panic button in her home. Security personnel responded almost immediately and she was taken to the village’s resident nurse,” Smith said.
After a nurse attended to Matthews, she was taken to Wilgers hospital.
Matthews had since been transferred to Unitas hospital and Smith said she was recovering well.
A task team had been appointed to assess and improve security at the village.
“We are all shocked about the attack, despite 24-hour access control and security patrols. The retirement village was developed and is managed to ensure that residents can have peace of mind. This is the first incident since the village opened in November 2014,” said Smith.
