The man accused of hacking donkeys with a panga was sentenced to three months imprisonment on Monday at the Temba Magistrate Court, according to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) on Tuesday.
Spokesperson inspector Mishack Matlou said he was pleased the accused was sentenced, but he also urged people to take care of animals. “Michael Tshiti Phalagadi (29) was sentenced to three months imprisonment with a suspension period of three years on condition that the accused is not convicted on an animal cruelty offence during the period of suspension,” he said.
The man was arrested early in 2015 after he was caught hacking donkeys with a panga, Matlou said.
Matlou said they would like to urge pastors to preach to the community about the importance of animals in their communities and that people must learn to love, care and feel sorry for animals.
Last week Tuesday, another man was arrested in Maubane for allegedly hacking two donkeys. The SPCA said he will appear in court soon.
