Four men armed with rifles hijacked an Intercape coach with 48 passengers near Hammanskraal in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Tembi Nowathe said the four hijacked the coach at the Carousel toll gate just after 03:30.
She said 19 cellphones, one laptop and R38 360 in cash were taken.
“The four men ordered the driver to move to a secure location before robbing the occupants. They were driving around for an hour. When the four men left the coach, the driver immediately went to the Hammanskraal police to report the incident,” she said.
Nowathe said no shots were fired and none of the passengers were injured.
Intercape confirmed the crime on Thursday.
“The coach was inbound from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, with 48 passengers, five drivers and one host on board. The coach passed through police presence at the toll gate and stopped on the other side of the toll gate to do a driver change,” the company said.
“The scheduled change-over was completed at the toll gate in line of sight of the police and toll staff.”
Intercape said the coach was approached by four armed men who then forced it to proceed to an area out of sight of the police and toll staff.
“After the police took statements from the passengers, the coach and it’s crew proceeded to the Johannesburg station. The police are investigating a case of armed robbery,” the company said.
“The passengers were assisted with further travel arrangements upon arrival at the Johannesburg station.”
Nowathe said no arrests had been made and the investigation was continuing.
