Violence that erupted in Atteridgeville on Thursday morning was not related to xenophobia, police said.
Police spokesperson, Constable Tumisang Moloto said mob justice led to the violence that was initially mistaken for xenophobic attacks.
This happened in Jeffsville near Phomolong in Saulsville.
“Police responded to a call of a person being attacked by community members. When police tried to rescue the person, their vehicles were stoned by the community members,” Moloto said.
Moloto said the situation was now calm with police still patrolling the area.
Information obtained by Rekord indicated the man was assaulted for breaking into homes in Jeffsville.
The SA National Civics Organisation (Sanco) said a shop was also looted in the area on Wednesday in a robbery that had nothing to do with xenophobia.
“According to the information we received, men walked into a shop owned by Pakistanis, robbed them of some items and left,” said Ronnie Mokoena, chairperson of Sanco in Ward 48, Brazzaville.
He said Sanco was trying its best to put an end to such crimes.
Police dismissed rumours of xenophobic attacks taking place, and asked residents to refrain from spreading such reports.
