Garsfontein police are on the lookout for two generator thieves operating in Garsfontein.
The two so-called thieves most recently struck the Bakers Bin on the corner of Godfrey Street and Gilda Road just before 14:00 on Wednesday 22 April.
Video footage from the store shows a man and a woman driving up to the side of the store in a red Hyundai Getz, before getting out and clearing space in the car.
The thieving couple then reversed the car out of view of the camera, loading the store’s generator in the car, before speeding off.
Store employees and management realising what had happened ran to the scene, but to no avail, as they had already disappeared out of sight.
“This set us back thousands of rand, as we had to buy a new generator, for the store to remain open during load-shedding. We have also opened a case of theft with the police,” said Michael Henwick, manager of Bakers Bin.
Garsfontein police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Dave Miller, said theft of generators is on the rise.
“Although it is not a daily occurrence, theft of generators is on the rise. The recent increase in load-shedding has created a black market for generators,” said Miller.
He said anyone who knows about the two suspected generator thieves, or sees anyone stealing a generator should phone the Garsfontein police on 012-470-4200.
