Pretoria school girls survive devastating earthquake in Nepal.

Pupils from a private Pretoria school, currently on a tour to Nepal, survived a deadly earthquake that hit the mountain country on Saturday, Pretoria private school, St Mary’s Diocesan School for Girls, confirmed that all of their pupils visiting Nepal were safe and accounted for following the devastating earthquake that hit the area on Saturday – leaving death and devastation in its wake.

Following news of the massive earthquake, St Mary’s posted requests on its Facebook page, asking for prayers for their pupils in Nepal after they had received information that over 1 800 people were killed and injured in the quake.

The school later updated their Facebook with news that all their girls were safe and accounted for.

According to world news reports rescue crews and residents in Nepal began a desperate search for survivors after a 7.8- magnitude quake hit the capital of Kathmandu.

The quake destroyed buildings, homes and temples, leaving thousands injured and killed.

President Jacob Zuma issued a statement that all South Africans in Nepal had been accounted for.

He sent a message of condolences to all the people affected by the natural disaster.

Johannesburg also felt small tremors on Saturday. The Council for Geoscience registered an event just after 08:00 on Saturday with a magnitude of about 2.5.

Michelle Grobbelaar from Geoscience said in a report that it was a small quake and that she was surprised that anyone felt the tremors.

According to residents, the tremors were worse in the south-west of the city and that it could be felt quite clearly in areas of Soweto.
