Schools could change mediums
Single medium schools in Pretoria will be converted to parallel-medium to absorb pupils who seek admission, the Gauteng Education Department said.
Single medium schools may be converted into parallel medium schools where English and any other language is used as medium of instruction, the Gauteng Department of Education said.
This follows rumours circulated that Afrikaans schools in Pretoria will be converted to dual-medium schools.
Spokesperson for the department, Phumla Sekhonyane said the rumours were incorrect. She said Afrikaans schools will not be affected as they will continue to teach as before, in Afrikaans-only classrooms.
“Available space must be utilised to absorb learners who seek admission from their area as per the SA Schools Act. Single medium schools may be converted into parallel medium schools and not dual-medium schools, which is one class with two mediums of instructions,” she said.
She said this means every school will have two classes, one being in English and another in any chosen language.
The education department is targeting all schools that are underutilised, with available space to admit pupils because the demand for space has increased, Sekhonyane said.
Sekhonyane said underutilised schools included those that have had a low learner enrolment and did not reach the 800 learner capacity allocated to each school.
“This is being implemented during the admission process for 2016,” Sekhonyane said.
