Sports fans can again look forward to a full weekend with a variety of sporting events to keep them busy.
Lots of action and exciting events awaits sport fans in Pretoria this weekend.
Rugby
SupeRugby: After taking a week off, the Vodacom Blue Bulls will start their Australasian tour against the Blues at Eden Park on Friday. Kick-off is scheduled for 09:30, South African time.
On Saturday, three South African teams will be in action in the SupeRugby series. The Sharks, who are also on tour, will do battle against the Waratahs at the Allianz Stadium at 11:40. The Lions’ turn arrive at 17:00 when they take on the Brumbies at Emirates Airline Park and then the Cheetahs play against the Highlanders in Bloemfontein in the late game at 19:10.
Vodacom Cup: On Friday night, Blue Bulls fans can support the union’s Vodacom Cup team when they take on the Cheetahs in the quarter final of this tournament. The game starts at 19:00 on Loftus Versfeld.
Schools rugby: A few classic school derbies are on the sports menu for this weekend. The biggest match will be the battle between Garsfontein and Waterkloof, which will be played on the former’s home ground. The first teams play at 13:30.
In Centurion, Eldoraigne and Zwartkop will clash on Eldoraigne’s home ground.
Soccer:
Nedbank Cup Final: With the Absa Premier League done and dusted, Mamelodi Sundowns will look to end their campaign on a high when they take on the in-form Ajax Cape Town in the final of the Nedbank Cup at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium on Saturday at 15h00.
Cricket:
With the Indian Premier League (IPL) coming to the knock-out stages, every team will look to go all out and be in the top four teams that will battle for a spot in the final next week. Faf Du Plessis and Kyle Abbot will look to help cement top place for the Chennai Super Kings when they take on the Kings Kings XI Punjab on Saturday afternoon.
AB de Villiers’ rich vein of form is set to continue when his Royal Challenges Bangalore host Dehli Daredevils at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore on Sunday.
Athletics
The well-known “Love Run”, which includes a 21.1km half marathon, a 10km race and a 5km fun run will again be presented this weekend at the premises of the Hatfield Christian Church. The race will start at 07:00 on Saturday morning. Enquiries: Winnie Koekemoer on 083-289-5270.
Cycling
Sunday 17 May sees the launch of South Africa’s next big Road Classic, which is being positioned as Pretoria’s signature mass participation road cycling event. The Bestmed Capital Classic will start and end at SuperSport Park in Centurion and it will constitute Pretoria’s biggest single day challenge on a road bike.
The event will take place on partially closed roads out and back to Krugersdorp via the Ben Schoeman and N14 Freeways. The cyclists will start this 100km race at 07:00.
