High school pupils need to make informed decisions about their future careers.
This was the message from Futuretons at a recent career expo at the Afro Zwanaka book café in Soshanguve Block AA.
The organisation, which provides pupils with information on career choices, invited experts from different fields to speak.
Among them were aviation representatives, chartered accountants, motivational speakers, and professional journalists.
Futuretons invited Wallmansthal High School, Soshanguve High School, Reitumetse High School, DC Marivate Junior Secondary School and Tiyelelane Secondary School to the expo.
Each school was represented by 10 children. Futuretons also invited Pre-touch Holdings that helps orphanages around the community of Soshanguve with food and funding for electricity and water.
The Mail & Guardian newspaper as well the Ke Glope and Leadership Company – that manufactures and sells graduation gowns – exhibited and shared their field of operations in detail.
There were motivational speakers such as Malibongwe Xaba, Kelebogile Pega and Phaphama Tshisikhawe who talked about their life experiences and how they came to succeed in their fields such as journalism and entrepreneurship.
These speakers encouraged pupils not to give up when facing difficulties.
The grade 12 pupils from the invited schools were excited to be part of the event.
Gloria Phaladi, a grade 12 pupil from Wallmansthal High School said she felt the expo was helpful. “I am motivated by the speakers. I already have direction on which career path I want to take,” she said.
Eunice Phiri, head of department and English teacher at Wallmansthal High School, was happy to be part of the event. She expressed her gratitude to the Futuretons educational foundation for hosting such an event.
Phiri said she was really grateful her school was selected to attend the programme. “It was great as it inspired the youth,” she said.
The event was organised by the founder of Futuretons, Sibonelo Tshabalala, with assistance from Frelimo Mnisi, owner of Afro Zwanaka book café, who provided the venue.
“It is a dream come true to me to host such an event because this is what I wanted to do when I opened my book café,” said Mnisi.
Futuretons also established a contact base for the learners to use when they need career-specific assistance in future. “We want to see the learners we are currently mentoring and see the effect this programme has on them,” said Tshabalala.
