Sport highlights, 22-24 May
This weekend offers heaps of sporting action for fans across a broad spectrum.
This weekend will bring enough action again on the sports front, both for the couch potatoes and those who choose to attend the action in person.
Rugby
Vodacom Cup semi-finals: This weekend the Pumas and Blue Bulls will be facing the two unbeaten sides in the Vodacom Cup this year, the Golden Lions and Western Province, when the four remaining teams face off in the semi-finals.
On Friday 22 May: The Lions will take on the Pumas in Johannesburg. This game starts at 17:00.
On Saturday 23 May: WP will meet the Blue Bulls at Newlands in Cape Town. The game will start at 16:30.
SuperRugby: All five South African teams will be in action this weekend. The Bulls are first in line when they play against the Chiefs in New Zealand on Friday morning at 09:35 (SA time).
At 11:40 on Friday morning, the Sharks will run out against the Reds in Brisbane.
On Saturday, the local ‘cat fight’ will take place in Bloemfontein when the Cheetahs and the Lions take each other on at 17:05.
In the last game of the weekend, the Stormers will play against the Rebels in Cape Town. This game starts at 19:10.
Athletics
The VirSeker Three-In-One race will be presented this Saturday in the north of Pretoria. This race was known as the Mongena Big-5 in the past and is very popular among athletes.
Participants have a choice between a 21,1km half-marathon (starting at 07:00), a 10km road race (also starting at 07:00) and a 5km fun run (starting at 07:15). The race will start and end at the Kolonnade Shopping Centre.
Medals will be awarded to the first 3 000 finishers within the cut-off time. Enquiries: Willie Engelbrecht on 081-347-5353.
Cricket
The prestigious Indian Premier League has reached the play-off stage.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Royal Challengers Bangalore, the team of AB de Villiers, David Wiese and Rilee Rossouw, was involved in a eliminator game against the Rajasthan Royals with Rusty Theron and Chris Morris in their midst.
The winner of this eliminator-game will take on the Chennai Super Kings, the team of Faf du Plessis and Kyle Abbott, in a semi-final on Friday at 16:30.
The winner of this semi-final will eventually take on the Mumbai Indians (with Marcant de Lange in their squad) in the 2015 final on Sunday. The final will start at 16:30 (SA time)
Netball
The Brutal Fruit Netball Premier League continues this weekend at the University of Pretoria Sports Complex in Hatfield. The local team of Pretoria, the Jaguars, will probably struggle again without their national players.
Three games will be played on Friday, the action starts at 18:00.
On Saturday, four games will takes place, the action starts at 12:30.
Sunday’s action starts at 10:30 when the first of three games kicks off.
