Orcas swim school recently held their first gala for 2015 where 250 learners were able to show off their progress. The emphasis of this gala was not about competition but more about participation. Each child received a well-deserved medal and treat.
Orcas swim school is a facility based at Southdowns College pre-preparatory school in Irene, Centurion, where swimming lessons form part of the curriculum. The mission is to teach children enjoyment of water, swimming skills and ultimately to be water-safe.
Beginners need to develop basic skills of water confidence, streamlining, recovery and propulsion. Children receive lessons twice a week in the hygienic indoor pool with water temperatures of 28°C—32°C and operating on the revolutionary E-clear system.
Lessons are also offered to children not attending Southdowns College from the age of 6 months. Under the ever watchful eye of the head instructor, Petro Dalton and her team, a unique programme is taught . Children are assessed and grouped according to their abilities, giving each child the opportunity to advance at suitable pace. Continuous assessments ensure progress and development.
