Dog catches accused murderer
A police dog helped to catch a wanted man in Pretoria West.
A K9 unit dog was the hero of the day after he sniffed out a criminal hiding under trees when a police helicopter failed to track the man in Pretoria West, the Tshwane metro police (TMPD) said.
Spokesperson Superintendent Kuki Tshabalala said the man was wanted for firing shots at the police recently at the R511 and WF Nkomo Street.
She said the man hid under trees after the shootout.
“The police chopper could not locate him, as he was hiding under dense trees. The K9 unit dog, however, picked up the suspect’s scent and started to track him down. The dog managed to apprehend the suspect and also located his hidden firearm,” Tshabalala said.
She said the firearm was illegal and police and the TMPD later found that the man had a previous murder case against him.
A case of attempted murder and conspiracy to commit a robbery was opened at the Atteridgeville police station.
