Three escapees re-arrested
Four escaped prisoners are still at large after three of the seven were re-arrested on Tuesday, police said.
Three of the seven prisoners who escaped from a holding cell at Lenasia Magistrate’s Court were re-arrested on Tuesday, police said.
The seven men apparently overpowered police officers working at the cells on Monday and forced open the main door before fleeing.
Police spokesperson Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said Brendon Paul and Luvesh Veerasmy were re-arrested in Lenasia while Mpho Ramatsoale was caught in Ennerdale.
The three appeared in court for house breaking and theft before they escaped.
The remaining four escapees are:
• Johnson Leroy for house breaking and theft
• Romeo Beukes for robbery and aggravating circumstances
• Dumisani Selepe for house breaking and theft
• Thabiso Sebelwane for house breaking and theft
“They could be anywhere. Members of the public are warned not to confront these prisoners, but to contact the nearest police station if they see them.”
Dlamini said investigations were underway to determine if the escape was due to negligence.
“Anyone who may have assisted the prisoners to escape will face a criminal case as well as disciplinary actions that may result in being discharged from the service.”
