Man hangs dog for eating chicks
WARNING: ARTICLE CONTAINS EXTREMELY GRAPHIC IMAGES. A man is facing charges of animal cruelty after he killed a dog by hanging it from a tree in Temba.
A 40-year-old man brutally killed a dog by hanging it from a tree in Temba, north of Pretoria, the Tshwane SPCA said.
He did so because the dog had eaten some of his chickens, said SPCA inspector Mishack Matlou. The man had been arrested.
The hanging happened in Stinkwater on Sunday night around 23:00.
Matlou said he responded to a complaint by the man’s neighbour who saw the animal hanging from a tree.
“I contacted the police to escort me in arresting this man. When we arrived, the man admitted that he hung and killed the dog because it ate nine of his chicks as well as the mother hen,” Matlou said.
Matlou said the man thought nothing wrong of his actions as he said he was tired of the dog.
“He recently killed a kitten by throwing it against a wall after it had also eaten one of his chicks.”
Temba police spokesperson Lieutenant Sarah Lesabane said an animal cruelty case was being investigated.
Matlou said it was time for people to become more educated about animal cruelty.
“We urge pastors to give us a few minutes from their church service for us to educate the community on animal rights. We would also like to target those in taverns to make them aware of the importance of taking care of animals.”
