Former police captain jailed
A former police captain was sentenced to 13 years in jail after he was convicted of numerous counts of corruption, police said.
A former Pretoria central police captain has been jailed for 13 years for fraud and corruption, police said on Friday.
Lawrence Mamogobo was convicted last week on 30 counts of corruption by the Pretoria Commercial Crimes Court. He was sentenced on Monday.
National police spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said Mamogobo fraudulently sold false firearm training certificates, firearm competency certificates and firearm licences.
He said Mamogobo was a former firearms officer at Central police station. He was dismissed after a disciplinary inquiry in 2013. Criminal charges were later brought against him.
“He was one of the 20 people, among them two brigadiers, two colonels and 12 admin clerks, who were suspended by police management when allegations of corruption in the issuing of firearm licences at the police’s central firearm registry first emerged about three years ago,” said Naidoo.
He said four of the 20 people resigned after they were served with notices of intention to suspend them.
National police commissioner Riah Phiyega had ordered the section to be cleaned after allegations of corruption surfaced about the manner in which applications for firearm licences were handled, Naidoo said.
“Mamogobo is the third person to have been dismissed in connection with the central firearm registry debacle, and one of the seven people who parted ways with the police over this.”
He said three of the initial 20 people were still on suspension while disciplinary hearings were underway.
The remainder had been given warnings and some were acquitted and returned to work.
Phiyega said the sentencing would serve as a lesson to those with authority within the service.
