Hijacker’s life saved by authorities
Authorities have saved an armed hijacker’s life after the vehicle he fled in crashed into a bridge and plummeted into a river.
The swift reaction of police and Tracker SA officers resulted in an armed hijacker being pulled to safety after pinned down in a getaway vehicle.
Police spokesperson Captain Rheineith Motlana said two armed men hijacked a Golf 7 in the early hours of Sunday near Brits, north west of Pretoria.
Motlana said authorities started a high-speed chase moments later towards Mabopane.
“The men crashed the hijacked vehicle into a bridge and landed in a river. The one man, a passenger, died instantly while the other was still trapped in the vehicle,” she said.
She said two Tracker SA employees and police officers risked their lives to free the trapped hijacker from the vehicle who was then rushed to hospital in a serious condition.
She said a case of possession of an unlicensed motor vehicle, firearm and ammunition is being investigated.
