Police shot and killed one man and arrested eight others in illegal firearm operation.
Police have shot and killed one man in an early Sunday morning Mamelodi shootout while recovering seven illegal firearms in a weekend crime clean-up operation. Eight men were arrested in the swoop.
Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said one of the illegal firearms, a rusty .22 rifle, had been handed over to residents who attacked an armed robber in Kagiso earlier.
Residents attacked a man who had robbed a local resident. The man’s accomplices handed over a firearm and a wallet with money to residents before police came to the robber’s rescue. Police arrested the man and he will be charged with armed robbery and possession of an illegal firearm.
“The eight arrested men are expected to appear in various Magistrate Courts while further investigations continue. It is suspected these firearms may have been involved in serious and violent crimes in the province,” he said.
Dlamini said the firearms, six pistols and a rifle, were recovered in Kagiso, Mamelodi, Orange Farm, Wierdabrug and Bedfordview.
In a separate case Mamelodi police have responded to residents complaining about a man suspected of robbing people in the area. “When police confronted the 39-year-old man he pulled out a firearm and police retaliated and fatally wounded him. Police are conducting further investigation relating to the deceased’s involvement in crimes,” Dlamini said.
