Neigbourhood considered dangerous
Residents of Elandspoort need police intervention to make their area safe.
Elandspoort is becoming a dangerous area to live, according to residents.
They claim their lives and those of their children are in danger. A resident and his father were shot at recently after robbers broke into their home.
“We had our house broken into where a window was broken and the television was stolen through the window. When my father and I got up to check what was happening we were shot at by the robbers,” resident Antonio April said.
He said on Monday evening when he got home his mother-in-law told him they heard gunshots a few blocks from their home.
“Things are getting out of hand here in our area. I have been living here for years and never had issues like this. I just want people to be aware of such things and report it to the police.”
Another resident from the area, Simon Mali said the area has been this bad since he can remember.
“There are small children using drugs and drinking alcohol. Some of them are even gangsters and carry firearms with them.”
Mali said the other problem is some parents don’t want to believe what their children are doing. Children as young as 13 years old are believed to be doing illegal things.
“You should hear the words these children say to us when we confront them. As parents we want a better society and do not like to see young children not attending school and doing bad things,” indicated Mali.
April said many residents in the area have children and they do not want them exposed to the kind of violence they see almost every day.
“The police need to start doing something and the community must report anything suspicious. I fear our children are in danger,” said April.
Residents said they also need more police visibility in the area to. They hope this will help with the problem they have in the area.
