Three alleged so-called airport robbers shot in Gezina, two dead.
Two of three alleged so-called airport robbers – who follow potential targets from OR Tambo airport to rob them – were shot dead in Gezina on Sunday evening.
According to a reliable source, there was a shoot-out between the police and the alleged robbers. The incident took place between 17 and 18 Avenue near Haaroff Street.
The source told Rekord the men attempted to rob a woman when things went wrong.
“The police have been looking for the men for weeks now. They are believed to be airport robbers who follow people from OR Tambo International Airport and rob them,” she said.
The source said the woman was followed from the airport. Before the gang of robbers could rob the woman, police arrived at the scene and a shoot-out ensued.
“The robbers are believed to be members of a syndicate which has been operating for some time but stopped their criminal activities for a while. It is believed that they had started operating again recently. The robbers are known to the police and have been on a wanted lists for some time” the source said.
Theo Breedt from the Moot Crime Prevention confirmed that the suspects were shot dead.
“I saw one suspect lying next to a BMW vehicle they were travelling in. Another suspected robber was also killed at the scene. We believe it was a robbery gone wrong.”
National police spokesperson Colonel Vish Naidoo said he was on his way to the scene and would give comment once he has all the information.
