Squatters bathing in cemetery upsets residents
Naked squatters bathing in cemetery in the east of Pretoria have neighbouring residents up in arms.
A trio of squatters exposing themselves while bathing at the Pretoria East cemetery has residents up in arms over a nearby squatter camp.
Heidi Boersema, a resident in the area visited the cemetery on 21 June at 15:00 when she noticed three men standing in the baby section of the cemetery.
“As we drove closer we noticed that they were all naked and bathing near a tap. One tried to hide in the nearby bushes, but the other two continued on. We drove away so that my young children wouldn’t be exposed to the naked men,” said Boersema.
Democratic Alliance Ward Councillor Lex Middelburg said that the nearby squatter camp, dubbed ‘Cemetery View’ is a great concern to residents. “People don’t visit the cemetery anymore because of the squatter camp. Many of the tombstones have been vandalised, and pieces of metal have been plundered from the tombstones.”
“The squatter camp has been built in a small marshland. The squatters use the surrounding areas as an ablution area. It is totally unacceptable living conditions and the Tshwane Municipality needs to act urgently to solve this problem,” Middelburg said.
