On Saturday, the 1st of August, Abbotts College will have their annual open day, where they will highlight some important subjects and skills to achieve great success in the final stretch of the school year.

Abbotts College Centurion is a leading Grade 10, 11 and 12 college in Gauteng. The teachers recognise the importance of challenging their students for the success in today’s world. For the past seven months each Abbotts student together with their teachers has been preparing for the final submission of assignments and the 2015 exams.

On Saturday, the 1st of August, Abbotts College will have their annual open day, where they will highlight some important subjects and skills to achieve great success in the final stretch of the school year. The academic excellence clinics will include Science, Math’s and how to approach a final assignment.

Science is everywhere around us and part of our daily life.  With the advances in technology and science, our world is transformed at an incredible pace. Being “science literate” is no longer a “luxury”.  It is an absolute necessity.  We cannot escape from the significance of science anymore. Love and passion for the subject must be instilled at school level. Therefore Abbotts College Centurion will host a science clinic for the Grade 12 learners to do revision on Grade 11 electricity and electrostatics from 9:00 – 12:00.

In addition, Mathematics  is a crucial in our daily life, especially the Grade 9 year for mathematics. It sets the groundwork for the last phase of mathematics. A clinic will be held from 9:00 – 11:00 to focus on Grade 9 factorisation. From Grade 10 onwards factorisation is integrated in all areas of mathematics, it is therefore extremely important that your child has a firm understanding of this work so that the transition from Grade 9 to Grade 10 mathematics can happen as smoothly as possible.

During the Grade 12 final mathematics examination learners are tested on both their Grade 11 and Grade 12 knowledge. In Grade 11 all the work on functions, except inverse functions, are already completed. This means that in Grade 12 learners will be examined on Grade 11 work that has been completed before their Grade 11 June examination. A refresher course on functions will therefore be presented from 9:00 – 12:00 to ensure that your child has all the fundamentals of functions that is necessary for a successful Grade 12 mathematics year.

Over and above, it is important to make sure each child know how to do an assignment, as it can be quite a tricky task.  What process should be followed to ensure the best possible final product, as well as what is the difference between a reference and a bibliography.  Abbotts College will explore the skills to approach an assignment and look at checklists that a student can use to determine whether his/her project meets all the necessary requirements. An assignment clinic will be hosted for Grade 9 – 12 students from 10:00 – 11:00.
